News from in and around the education and training sector.

The Monday Morning View

Last week was certainly a week of ups and downs. With over 75% of applicants to the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers successful in their submission last week began with some very happy messages and phone calls flying around. For those of you that had basically put your business plans, and sometimes lives, on hold until the results came out it was a welcome relief.

Unfortunately, the last couple of weeks have seen a number of providers either entering administration or shutting down altogether and this included some large independent training providers. I hailed the new register as a possible new dawn for independent training providers and it’s sad to see so many closing their doors before the reforms kick in.

The new opportunities for providers included on the RoATP are now growing and it’s obvious that public sector bodies have had to radically change the way they approach Apprenticeships. If the reforms were meant to increase the number of Apprentices in the public sector it certainly looks like the Apprenticeship Levy is forcing the hand of some organisations.

For providers who haven’t had a direct SFA contract before that have been successful in their application to RoATP there’s lots of work to do to get you contract ready. Take your time, read all the guidance, be sure of your delivery model and make sure you’re going to sash the minimum performance levels!
